When does Colostrum start?
Colostrum will start to come in during your second trimester (16 weeks) and will only be in small quantities of less than 1ml, each time.
How long does Colostrum last?
Colostrum lasts until you are about 3 days postpartum when it will evolve into your breastmilk; a more watery, milky-coloured consistency.
How much colostrum should I express?
Colostrum can be collected safely from 36 weeks pregnant. It is always recommended though to contact your health care professional before starting colostrum collection. In terms, of how much you should collect; this is body dependent on the collection being variable to each person. Some mothers may only be able to collect 1ml per collection, whilst others may get up to 5ml.
How much colostrum should I take to the hospital?
When taking your colostrum to the hospital, ensure that all your syringes are labelled appropriately, so they can be stored. With regards to how many you should take, a new baby will only need up to 20mls a day, you will also continue to produce colostrum for the 72 hours following your labour.
How long can colostrum be stored in the fridge?
Colostrum can be safely stored for up to 6 months in the freeze once collected. It is recommended that it not be stored any longer and it is not re-frozen once defrosted. You can defrost the colostrum by simply placing the syringe into a cup of boiling water.
How often do I express colostrum before birth?
You can hand express colostrum twice a day, once morning and then once later in the evening. To get the best results it is recommended to try collecting after a warm shower or after you have applied heat to the breasts with a warm pack or cloth.
How many MLS of colostrum does a newborn need?
A newborn will consume up to 20mls of colostrum within the first 24 to 48 hours of life. After this period, their needs may shift to up to 100mls per day.
